Burping and farting come hand in hand, like the straw to the berry or the cheese to the cake. Alright weird analogy but have you ever wondered if they were both the same thing? I mean, I’d rather burp in a quiet lift than fart… but hey, is there a way to stop it?
Why do we burp and fart?
Did you know that an average person burps 3 – 4 times after a meal and farts 6 – 20 times a day? This depends on what we eat and how we eat our food. As we eat, we don’t just swallow food but air too, and if you eat with your mouth open, more air would enter. We burp because we need to expel the excess air out of our stomach.
As food gets digested and fermented, the bacteria in our intestines produce some amount of gas as by products and these include carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen. These have to be expelled too in the form of flatulence (farting).
So they’re both the same?
No, not exactly. Even though they’re both gas, burps are from swallowed air while farts are gas created after food gets digested.
How do I stop it?
I hate to break it to you but… we can’t because we have to eat, but there are ways you can reduce the number of times it happens.
How to burp and fart less
Eat slowly and with your mouth closed as excess air would not enter so you’ll tend to burp less. If you know you’re going to be with a large group of people, watch out for these foods that tend to trigger extra gas:
- Kimchi, onions, bean sprouts
- Foods high in whole grains (bread, cereal)
- Fruit and fruit juices
- Dairy products (milk)
- Carbonated drinks
But don’t avoid these foods altogether! (except the carbonated drinks) They’re really good for you and there are so many benefits to it, like lowering your risk of cancer and diabetes
