As you know, eating buffets can be quite costly. If you’re going to splurge, you might as well make your money’s worth! Here’s 8 tips that will help you out-eat all your peers and maximise your buffet experience.

Okay, now let’s get started! I should also warn you that I treat eating at buffets very seriously.

1. Don’t be too hungry

Here’s the number 1 rule: don’t be too hungry. It’s true! The last thing you want to do before a buffet meal is starve yourself. The size of your stomach will shrink and you won’t be able to eat as much as you want to.

Have a decent sized breakfast in the morning and it will set you right up for your eating extravaganza. Think of it as doing stretches before a long run — it’s necessary.

 

2. Hydrate well before the meal

Time to prep your stomach for battle! Drink lots of water throughout the day before buffet, as that will keep your stomach hydrated, stretched and ready. Your body also need that hydration to break down the food you’re about to pile in.

 

3. Make room

Well… to put more food in, you will need to clear out the old stuff. You get the idea.

 

4. Small portions, great variety

Feeling full? It’s all in the mind. When we get bored of a certain taste, our brain tricks us into feeling “full” so we stop eating. Eating in variety helps to break up the monotony of tastes and allows you to eat more. So take them in smaller portions, one at a time. There’s no point in piling your plate with a mountain of toasts when you’re free to go back as many times as you want.

 

6. Keep calm and pace yourself

Eating buffet is all about having a great strategy, not the speed. Sure, some buffets do have a time limit, but they are usually not anything less than 90 minutes. And guys, we can eat a lot in 90 minutes.

Don’t go in shovelling down all your food all at once. Eating at a steady speed will make you feel less bloated and leave room for more food later.

It’s also important that you relax and don’t get over excited, as being anxious or overly excited can also make your stomach bloated.

 

7. Eat in this sequence: 

Start with soups or salad to build high water content, which will help to settle in that big slab of beef later. After soup, move on to the meats, followed by carbs, and end off with cold dishes. (Tried and tested, by yours truly.)

 

5. Soda is not your friend

I know, after piling in so much food and being bombarded with so many flavours, it’s tempting to wash down with a glass of ice cold coke. Don’t do that — It’s as good as giving up, AND WE BUFFET EATERS DO NOT GIVE UP. Soda and all carbonated drinks is going to bloat up your stomach and flatten your appetite.

Instead, clean your palette with some peppermint tea that will aid in your food digestion as well.

 

8. eat something sweet

When you’re getting full and sick from all that food, eat a square of dark chocolate. As weird as it sounds, having something sweet will help you get ready for your second round. Don’t back down so easily!

 

Or just take it easy and enjoy your meal. That’s the best way to make your money’s worth. 😉
